Norwalk, CT, Aug. 1, 2021- The Norwalk Mentor Program (NMP) is growing faster than ever and looking to add new mentors for the fall school year. Just one hour a week can change a student’s life. For 35 years, NMP has been matching adults with Norwalk students in need. There’s no cost to become a mentor, and it’s an easy thing to do - spending just one hour a week with a mentee. “Our mentors play checkers with their students, or they talk about music or sports, or how things are going at school,” said Jasmine Prezzie, Director of the Norwalk Mentor Program and former program mentee. Referencing her own experience with NMP, she explains, “I had two great mentors. They showed up in my life every single week...it was a great experience.” National research reports that mentoring positively impacts problematic behaviors and academic performance, while reducing unexcused absences. These findings highlight the need for new NMP mentors to advance the development of Norwalk youth. Even in the unpredictability of the 2020 pandemic, 345 mentors stayed connected and committed to their Norwalk mentees. These adults helped guide their mentees to earn 12 scholarships and proudly celebrated 16 graduating seniors in 2021. “The main thing for these kids is to just have a caring adult who shows up regularly to spend time with them,” said Prezzie. “Having a mentor in your corner can make all the difference in the world.” To become a new mentor, visit http://norwalkmentors.com/. ###
