The extremes of emotion, from the opening funeral march to the complete jubilation of the end are something that have to be heard to be believed. It will be preceded with a short work by the young contemporary British composer Daniel Kidane, who is of Russian and Eritrean descent and is beginning to have his music played by major orchestras around the world. I chose his piece, Be Still, for strings, and percussion, because its sound-world is similar to the “Adagietto” from the Mahler, and also because while that movement is famously romantic, this work is contemplative and atmospheric. It will give the audience the opportunity to, in fact, “be still”; to shake off the chaos of the outside world and put their minds in the perfect place for the great journey ahead.” Then the main event - Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, is presented with no intermission. From its opening trumpet fanfare through all five movements, including the hauntingly beautiful adagietto (played at Robert Kennedy’s funeral in 1968), this bold and dynamic symphony speaks of love, energy, and determination. Come experience the full force of our orchestra in this emotionally engrossing and ultimately victorious masterpiece. Since 1939, the Norwalk Symphony has enhanced the quality of life of Southwestern Connecticut by offering full seasons of orchestral music with professional musicians and visiting artists. Jonathan Yates, Music Director and Conductor, is celebrating his twelfth season with the Symphony. Norwalk Concert Hall at Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue. Individual tickets, which range from $10 for students and children and $25, $37.50 or $50 for adults, can be purchased online at the Symphony’s website www.norwalksymphony.org/buy-online or by calling the Symphony office at 203.956.6771.
