The two organizations are committed to bridging the gap between the arts and their local communities by creating “collective impact” through partnerships with other nonprofit organizations for their productions. The Norwalk Symphony and The New Paradigm Theatre are partnering for this one-night-only production at 7:30pm on Saturday, February 11, 2023 (snow date: Sunday, February 12, 2023 at 7:30pm), to present one of the greatest musicals in the American repertoire. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s music and lyrics will be showcased by the Symphony as well as performers from CT and NYC. The 1945 work was adapted from Ferenc Molnár's 1909 play Liliom, transplanting its Budapest setting to the Maine coastline. The story revolves around carousel barker Billy Bigelow, whose romance with millworker Julie Jordan comes at the price of both their jobs. He participates in a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn child; after it goes tragically wrong, he is given a chance to make things right. A secondary plot line deals with millworker Carrie Pipperidge and her romance with ambitious fisherman Enoch Snow. The show includes the well-known songs "If I Loved You", "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" and "You'll Never Walk Alone.” “Domestic violence is a part of the story that unfolds involving the two main characters, Billy and Julie. Although the Rogers and Hammerstein adaptation was written almost 80 years ago, the domestic violence dynamics depicted between the two characters, unfortunately, still have relevance in our world today,” said Suzanne Adam, Executive Director of DVCC. “We hope this performance serves as an opportunity to open the conversation about domestic violence dynamics and how to get help for yourself or a loved one.” Since 1980, the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC) has provided counseling and advocacy services for victims of domestic violence and their children. DVCC is the only state-certified agency recognized by the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) serving the communities of Norwalk, Stamford, New Canaan, Darien, Westport, Weston and Wilton. DVCC’s role is to help those experiencing any level of domestic violence and assist them in building a safer environment for the well-being of themselves and their families. DVCC’s victim services include 24-hour crisis intervention through the hotline and two emergency safe houses, legal advocacy, counseling for adults and children and housing and financial sustainability services. Last year DVCC served 3,865 local residents. All of DVCC’s services are free and confidential, multilingual and multicultural. If you or someone you know needs help, please call DVCC’s hotline at 203-588-9097 or visit the website at dvccct.org. Tickets at www.norwalksymphony.org or 203.956.6771. VIP Reception tickets for the pre-concert and intermission are available in limited quantity and can be purchased at the time you buy your tickets.
